Gramercy Park, or simply Gramercy as the locals call it, is one of the city's most beautiful and historic neighborhoods. A walk around Gramercy Park feels like a walk through another time. The area was initially called Gramercy Farm and was owned by Samuel Ruggles, a developer and vocal advocate of greenspaces in the city. Today the area is known for beautiful old town houses and historic homes, in fact 34 Gramercy Park(east) is considered by many the first apartment building in NYC.

How to spend a day in Gramercy
Aside from the more well-known Gramercy Park, two other green spaces in this tiny neighborhood are worth a visit. Peter's Field was named after the last Dutch General of New York, and Stuyvesant Square Park was named after Peter Stuyvesant, the wealthiest man in America in his day. Also, check out the magnificent Fotografiska Museum, a must for any lover of visual arts, and for fans of the TV show Friends, there is The FRIENDS™ Experience New York.

After a day on your feet exploring, the best way to end the night is with a few quiet drinks and some great conversation. Gramercy Park is well known for its bars and especially its Irish bars. Gramercy Ale House, Plug Uglies, or Paddy Maguire's Ale House are all very popular with the locals, and in this small neighborhood, it’s easy to check out one, if not all, of them. If late night is on the cards, you can head over to the always-open late Barfly, a popular joint for local chefs to gather after they cook the busy dinner shift.

What is Gramercy known for?
Without a doubt, the star of Gramercy is Gramercy Park; sadly however, it is a private park (one of only two in NYC) and it is not accessible to the general public. That being said, it is still worth a visit. It sits in a quadrangle of some of the most beautiful buildings in the city, and a walk around the park is a real treat. Standing in the center is the Edwin Booth Statue; Edwin Booth was the most prominent actor of his day and the founder of The Players Club, right across the street from his statue.
