What to do in Lower East Side

Lower East Side overview
Wedged between East Houston (pronounced House-tin, like the locals), the Bowery and the East River is the neighborhood known as the Lower East Side, or LES. Gritty, artsy and eclectic are just a few of the words we use to describe one of the oldest and most beloved areas of the city.
Originally inhabited by Jewish and German immigrants, the LES has always been the backbone of the New York working class. But in the last few years, this traditionally working class area has evolved into a neighborhood known for its world class restaurants, hip bars and nightlife - now frequented by generations of NYU students and members of New York’s in-crowd.

How to spend a day in Lower East Side
To walk down Orchard street today is to see New York from another time, still rich in its Jewish traditions - many of the stores have been here for generations. Tucked in between all of this you will find great discount shopping and some of the trendiest stores in NYC. No trip to the LES would be complete without experiencing one of the many delicatessens in the area. At the northern end of Orchard Street you will find two of the best. Katz Deli, has been serving up warm pastrami on rye since 1888. Less than two minutes away is Russ & Daughters, another iconic deli specializing in smoked fish and caviar. With your appetite sated, head to the Tenement Museum - this remarkable museum is a testament to the NYC immigrants who built this city. Still peckish and want something sweet? Try a donut at The Doughnut Plant. Sourdoughs, vegan or gluten free - they have it all

How to spend a night in Lower East Side
The theater scene in the LES is thriving and alive. Here you will find shows ranging from classical, to the absurd, to the out-of-this-world. At the heart of all of this is Dixon Place, centrally located it produces all things from puppetry, to comedy, to dance. No two visits will ever be the same. Also worth a visit is the Theater Latea - this Latin American theater has been entertaining NYC for over thirty years and is at the forefront of multicultural theater in the city.
The curtains have closed, bows have been taken - so what now? It's time to finish off your day with a drink. There is no end to the choices when looking for bars in this part of the town. Whether it's live music, DJ’s, or a sports bar, the LES has you covered. For live entertainment you can’t go past the Parkside Lounge. Grimy and grungy, this local favorite will keep you occupied late into the night. If you have always hoped to experience a real prohibition era speakeasy you can’t go past The Back Room. Located right around the corner from… wait, I’ll let you find this one. That’s half the fun. Once you get there enjoy a cocktail in teacup! Just like they did during Prohibition.
